Could be a great help in redesigning your church May 24, 2010 D. Deneke (Cape Girardeau, MO USA) Minuses first-The book was repetitive. It probably could be 20-30 pages shorter and still get everything covered.
I would have liked definitions of program, process, ministries, etc.
Pluses-The theory presented and tested in this book makes so much sense. I work in a church which has been approaching ministry using a shotgun. Reading this made me realize how much time, energy, and financial resources we have been wasting. I hope I can influence my church to implement the process and approach to ministry that is described in this book.
Great resource! February 22, 2010 V. Reed (Fayetteville, NC USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The book is fantastic. It offers practical insight on how to setup and run a ministry in an effective, God-centered manner. I would highly recommend this book to anyone desiring for more ministry-effectiveness.
Simplify the complexity February 15, 2010 David May (St. Paul, MN) These guys have some good principles from which to work. It is a worthwile read. I borrowed it from one of my three "goodreads" friends because a local church seems to have bought into it and is using it to justify some changes they are making. I wanted to see what it was about.
The authors want us to focus on the process of making disciples, establish a three or four step process, and build everything around that process. They push for everything the church does to be a part of that "simple" process. They emphasize four aspects of running the process, starting with clairty, which includes uniform commuincation to everyone so that everyone is using the same language. The second aspect is movement. Everyone needs to be moving through the process and know where they are as they become more mature in Christ. Aspect #3 is alignment. Everything the church does should be aligned with the process. If a program is not aligned with the process, it should be changed or eliminated. Aspect #4 is focus. The leadership, and then the congregation, needs to be intensly focused on the steps of your process.
I think they over did it, making their recommendations into something that could have been aimed as well at a grocery store chain, or auto repair business as at the church. I think they are right, though, that many churches could benefit from a hard look at the complexity that has built up over time. I guess I am agreeing that we need to be simple and understandable, but I think I would have gone about it in a different way. Or maybe what I am saying is that I would have set up a process with different steps than theirs, an option they allowed for. It is a book that will make you think.

Simle Church:Returning to God's Process for Making Disciples February 7, 2010 Michael A. Williams (Goldsboro, N.C.) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is an excellent book for the pastor/church leader that is sincerely interested in developing their church. The Biblical concept to focus on ministry is encouraged. I highly recommend this book! Pastor Mike Williams
